A phased return to work industry by industry is being considered by the government, two official Whitehall sources have said, with essential sectors such as manufacturing getting back to business as usual before less vital ones, such as entertainment.
However, it was acknowledged that it may be difficult to rank different industries based on how important they are to the economy, how much social contact is involved in the work being carried out and the strength of any protective measures required to keep people apart, the Guardian reports.
The officials also went on to say that it was more possible than other suggestions that have been put forward, such as letting those aged between 20 and 30 return to normal lives earlier than older people.
“Work is underway on an exit strategy but the public wants us to be focused on stopping the spread of the disease while building up the NHS and saving lives … Whitehall is working extensively on this but the peak is not reached and the government needs to focus in its public messaging on staying at home to save lives,” Boris Johnson’s official spokesman said.
Earlier this week (April 16th), Dominic Raab warned that lockdown measures could remain in place until June, with plans now implemented for a minimum three-week extension in order to avoid a second peak of infection.
He also said that there was also the potential for ongoing local lockdowns to be brought in throughout the summer to prevent new hotspots from emerging.
